TERM 3 JOURNALS

The whole of Term 3 is devoted to your exploration of your chosen text and two appropriations. During the term you will be keeping a regular journal, you'll be writing an original appropriation and you'll be sitting for two exam papers. You can read the details of the Term 3 assessments here. Altogether, 60% of your assessment mark comes from Term 3 work.

The journal is central and it is important that you start it soon. Here are the details of the journal task.

For students in my class, you need to choose the medium for your journal. Here are the option:

1. Handwritten in a beautiful book.
The advantage of this is that you can make it a thing of crafted beauty, and that you're not dependent on computer access to the internet. The disadvantage is that other students won't be able to regularly read your journal.

2. As blogs on this Ning
The advantages are that you're familiar with this and access by me and other students is easy. The disadvantage is that it's difficult to make it really personal and aesthetically pleasing.

3. On a special page created by you on the class wiki
This is how my students did it last year. Have a look at what some of them did. The advantage over the Ning is that there are more features on the wiki for making your journal look just how you'd like it to look.

4. On a blog of your own, using something like WORDPRESS
This is how I keep my own online journal. The disadvantage is that it's something new to learn about and set up. The advantage is that it has many many more features to help you create exactly the kind of journal and look that you want.

I strongly recommend that you spend some time during the holidays thinking about these different options, and that you begin your journal sooner rather than later.

Have a good break.

EX1101 Ms Beman's class notes

Nota bene: these are just note-form; don't think this is a comprehensive
list of what happened in the lesson or that it is necessarily coherently structured. Notes were only taken for the 5 lessons that are listed below (apparently; I remember more...). These notes are not a transcript and do not cover everyone's points, nor is there any guarantee that each point is complete. Use these as a reminder and extrapolate on these ideas in your own journals. These notes are also subject to certain clas… Continue

The end?

So, the term's work is done (mostly), and now we must reflect upon our completed journey. Oh, yeah, and we need to show that we have developed across the term. Tricky.

At the start of this term, I predicted difficulties, and lots of them. I was right. The main difficulty I faced in creating the appropriation was time. As Gene Wilder once said "Hurry! We have so much time and so little to do! [pause] Wait. Strike that, reverse it." Given more time, my appropriation could have been a lot better.… Continue

Continued Analysis on Philosopher's Stone and the Hobbit

I now have seen the film to the end, so I would like to continue explaining the other similarities that I have found between the two texts: Philosopher's Stone and The Hobbit.

9. Tests - Harry, Ronald and Hermione enters the forbidden part of the school where there is a three headed dog called Fluffy who protects something away from people. As they enter the room, they are almost caught by Filch who is the keeper of that part of the school. However Hermione, with her knowledge, opens the locked… Continue

Closing

I guess now is my opportunity to reflect on the course so far. Over the last 3 terms we have collectively amassed a lot of work and its difficult to sieve through it all. I entered this course unaware of what to expect, after reading the Odyssey in the holidays I was a little taken aback was this what Extension English would be like for the rest of the year?

Thankfully I was wrong, to be honest I was captivated by some areas of the course, bored by others, then again that is the same with all s… Continue
